Let's Peek Into Some Nest Boxes!
This is a litter of 10 day old Mini Lops.
The mother rabbit picks up hay in her mouth and makes a nest in a nest box. She then pulls fur from her belly and chest to line the nest with. This will keep the kits warm and prevent hypothermia. Kits can die whenever it is 65 degrees or lower out. She will cover the kits up with her fur after they are born and she nurses them.
Kits are born deaf and blind. Their ears and eyes are sealed shut at birth. They do not have fur, but you can usually tell what their markings will be like and sometimes you can tell what color they will be. They have teeth and sharp little nails. They can crawl and wiggle and make funny noises at birth.
Mother rabbits will nurse their young once or twice a day. Rabbit milk is so rich that the kits will grow very fast! They will have fur by day 7. Their eyes and ears will open on day 10. They can POP (jump straight up in the nest box) at 3 weeks old. They will start nibbling on hay and grain at 4 weeks and their muscles become much stronger each week. They will be able to jump and climb between 6-8 weeks.
